Who Runs Our Cities? New Report On Political Gender Gap

Ladies-Senators

Women are half of the U.S. and world’s population. But you wouldn’t know it looking at their representation in government.

The Equality Indicators’ new report, “Who Runs Our Cities? The Political Gender Gap in the Top 100 U.S. Cities” documents women’s under-representation in government at the local level. Most studies focus on their under-representation at the federal and state level. This report goes further, by answering three questions:

  1. Are women better represented at the local level than at the state and federal levels of government?
  2. As women are elected, do more women run for-and win-future elections?
  3. Are women under-represented because they do not win elections or because they do not run for office?
